The most common way people kill their plants is by over watering, especially after I or they initially put their plants in the ground. Plants have been living in their home, a pot, for an amount of time that they become comfortable. They stretch their legs and get nice and comfy. When they are removed from their home and stuck in a new, unfamiliar place they typically become unhappy. The roots have more room to grow and require the assistance to do so.
If the plant is planted properly, and by properly I mean at the right height and the roots are loosened, then your only responsibility is to water it. It is ideal for the plants root ball to get fully watered and then dry out. Picture a side view of a plant and its rootball. Now picture it being fully watered and and drying out. It's that simple. Letting the plant fully dry out gives it something to work for and strengthens the roots.
Did you have a "lightbulb" moment after reading this? I hope so! Visualizing the plants intake of water is what helped me understand when and how much water it needs. In time, this method can do the same for you, so you will never feel the shame of committing unjustified watercide.
